Hi guys, wonder if you could give me some advice?
My S9, purchased about 3 years ago, has far stronger audio on AM than on SSB.
I've read before that some radios are better performers on certain modes, i.e. the SS158EDX is reported to be a better AM performer than SSB. Likewise, I've read that the RCI2950DX is a far better SSB performer than on AM.
MY S9 is GREAT on AM, but disappointing on SSB. |

Hello Bert, I own the 50 watt Magnum S-9 myself. The radio was made to be a screamer on AM. I really like the SSB audio, not a big difference but it is not as loud as the AM audio, which is a good thing. Of course you need your audio to be loud enough to hear in SSB mode but if someone is trying to have big loud and proud SSB audio just like AM it starts to sound kind of garbled and very hard to understand or at least uncomfortable to the receiving persons ear.
If your SSB contacts can copy you with no trouble and no one has complained then the radio is probably OK but if all is loud and proud on AM and you switch to SSB and you cannot make the contacts or they can barely hear you then the only thing I could think of is maybe you need the radio aligned from the factory.
I started out my S-9 with the stock mic and boy was it loud to the point I had to back the mic gain down on SSB, on AM you can blast away cause nobody cares. In the radio owners manual it states that it has been adjusted internally for use with a noise canceling mic. So I tried out my favorite N/C mic the Astatic 636 and it gives it a more smooth audio, easier on the ears. Note that you do have to close talk the stock or N/C mic to get the max audio out. I actually hold the mic touching pressed against my mouth.
Also bought from Copper I have never removed the radio covers, only added the new mic.
I did try the RoadKing 56 and I was not pleased. It did make it much louder but it also added distortion. I'm one of those guys that can't stand even one pop of static.
It is possible to turn up the mic gain from the inside , I think it is VR14, you might want to check your owners manual to verify.
Just remember that SSB is not intended to be a loud mode anyway.
