Hi. I have a connex and a 5pill. Im using a workman HP201S meter, wilson 5000. When i key up the radio and amp. then adjust the meter (dir) turn the SET knob 123456789- the needle use to come up slowly and you would get it right on the end of the red line, then turn the (dir/ref) knob to ref... and it should tell you your SWR... BUT.. when im tryin to turn the knob slowing to get the needle on the end of the red line.. it goes straight from the left side to right side of the meter with having any control adjustment.??? I hope someone understands what im trying to say. please helppp... very frustrated |

Be certain that the radios dead key is appropiate for driving the amp. Also it may help to turn the mic gain all the way down so that the radio transmits no audio while dead keying. Double check all coax jumpers, coax and especially the integrity of the connection inside the Wilson. When an SWR meter does this it could mean you have a short somewhere in the coax. KEEP IT REAL! im with kenny on this .and 2 add to that one way 2 tell is take amp out of line then try check swrs.if all is well then that will of course limit the possibilties alot.to just being a bad jumper or too much drive.if it does this with amp out of line aswell then theres a little more of a issue could be bad coax or pinched coax.bad pl259 connection. dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

so if the DK is set too high this will cause the issue of needle pegging the meter ??? I never had problems until i went to ( *****) radio to get something done.. and they said they could make it louder.. maybe the new adjustments and whateva else they did was not right ? it DK;s 10w.. 35 on high.. ( it is variable) |

Ballwrecker, I'm not saying that your deadkey being set to high or low is causing the trouble. It is just easier to get all your gear to work properly when you have everything just right. RF getting into places you don't want it to be for instance, sometimes excessive deadkey and modulation over 100% is the culprit. Some CB shops are known for modulation being set for over 100%. Whatever the amp MAX pep is the deadkey should be one fourth of that at 100% modulation. This is how AM mode is supposed to work, that's if premium audio is your thing. I don't know what Connex you have and what amp you running so I couldn't suggest any numbers for you. Back to the SWR issue. Israel is correct. You do want to set your swr with the amp off. Actually I check my own swr with antenna , meter and radio only. Nothing you add inline is going to change the swr. Only by changing the length of the antenna can you change the SWR. Once you add componets inline and realize you have a different reading means that one of the componets is not operating correctly or installed incorrectly. I read though your posts again. What changes have you made to your setup since all was well besides taking it in to the cb shop who modified it? Possible that their "tuneup" has just created the terrible 2nd harmonic from over 100% modulation and who knows what gruesome deeds they did to your beloved Connex! KEEP IT REAL! take radio back to were they clipped the limiter and tell them to put it back in.then look 2 left of this post see if its listed in mods and tune it yourself.not hard just need a watt meter.and also check yourswrs with amp out of line.then if swr is ok.then add amp, check swr for changes if ok finally now check swr with amp on.also turn your audio all way down mic gain and power mic if ya use one dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64
